 | Any dress design should dictate the style of underwear needed when making a choice for a wedding day. But be aware that unless your underwear is made to a particular design to fit with the dress you may be disappointed with the choice.
In an ideal world underwear should be chosen before the wedding dress is fitted. This is because it is rare, even for a bride spending thousands of pounds on outerwear, to find stock lingerie to suit. Lingerie and underwear appear to be a last minute consideration but are of primary importance. These form the foundation of the attire on to what the ensemble is built. We can bet that you have decided on your dress and during the fitting wore undies from your drawer that you have no intention of wearing on the biggest of days! Did your supplier suggest what foundation wear would be appropriate?
What could you choose? If you have an A, B or firmer C cup bust size you may get away without much support. If however, you have a C, D, DD or above, support is definitely needed. Separates i.e., bra, suspender belt and brief? A Basque and brief? A corselette or body shaper? Maybe even a corset? What ever you choose needs to be capable of support whilst not showing above the upper hem line or through a bodice.
Dresses have so many different neck lines which dictate what can be worn underneath. A sweetheart neck at the front or back means no shoulder straps can be visible, as would a plunging back. This suggests a strapless bra would suit, but how many do you know that don’t move up at the bottom, down at the top and start to bulge in the middle after a few hours wear? If you have a D cup or above you could be in trouble. The strapless bra will rarely provide sufficient support unless it has pre-formed cups similar to that used in swimwear. Pre-formed cups are used by a few high street stores on major stock lines, but you may struggle to find a decent colour and on many occasions a larger size to suit.
We appreciate we are here to sell underwear, but this article is intended to help you irrespective of the eventual supplier of your lingerie. |

If you have been pro-active and decided to do some research prior to choosing any garments for your wedding day we applaud you. Look at our own designs or that of other companies. Basques, Bras and Corsets. Do the styles you like suggest a limitation on the neck line design of your dress? If so what alternative neck design is available? Instead of a full sweetheart neck why not consider a plunging front neckline which allows shoulder straps to be worn with the bra or Basque. This can have plunge or cleavage cups which enhance the bust and will be as devastatingly beautiful as any sweetheart shaped neck could ever be.
Have you considered Corsetry? Nothing reduces the waist or enhances the figure to a greater degree. Although it’s a faster way of losing inches than dieting it’s also worth considering some major points. Corsets contain about 8 or 10 vertical bones. They have a full length metal front fastening called a ‘busk’ and a laced back. The designs and principals are over 100 years old at a time when bras were unheard of. A larger bust is pushed to the chest as one can see when watching period drama on television. The Victorian lady could faint through constriction of the torso whilst trying to obtain a wasp sized waist!
Although the design principals have not changed we tend not to get too enthusiastic with over tightening today. That said, a reduction of your waist size by 2 or 4 inches means the flesh has to go somewhere so a figure needs to be trained to a corset. This takes time as the body becomes used to the restrictive nature of the garment. Internal organs become used to the restriction and stop telling you about the pain they originally felt on first wear.
We are not being over dramatic here. Corsetry is not a throw-on style of garment. It will make you sit up straight but it will restrict movement. It will improve your posture and with training it will reduce your waist size. For a first time wearer to consider this style of garment for a wedding day is a bad idea. Firstly the restrictive nature will cause you to become warm which will be exacerbated by nerves on the big day. Secondly because the garment does not flex, the boning may show through a tight fitting bodice. Thirdly the lack of flexing could mean the corset sticks out slightly at the top hem when you are seated. This could show through the dress. Fourthly, the upper hems tend to be high at the front and back which would not suit many wedding dress designs. Finally, if you have considered these points and still wish to go ahead with wearing a corset then take a look at what we have to offer but consider the following; | |
If you have decided on the underwear you wish to wear please, please buy it and try it well before the wedding. The same applies to hosiery. You need to know your chosen pieces are the correct size, that they are comfortable and that they fit the dress design. Once your choice is clear you can forget about it until the wedding day and concentrate on all the other things that need buying or choosing.
Hosiery is often another last minute item on many a brides shopping list. Usually a neutral or pale tone is worn which is rarely worn on other occasions. A different style or product code may be bought rather than your normal choice. How do you know they will be long enough, the right shade, comfortable and many other little points if you don’t try a pair with your chosen underwear and/or dress? Whether you choose us or another retailer for your hosiery we strongly suggest buying and trying well before the big day.
Buy two pairs. One to try and one to wear new on the day. The initial pair should be on hand as a back up. There is many a bride who has snagged a pair before getting to the ceremony. Give the spare pair to your mother who will probably have the big handbag full of tissues and can keep them on hand for an emergency. Two pairs of hosiery are not going break the bank when you’re spending oodles of dosh on the dress and accessories.
